Sebastian Stan’s All-Pink Outfit Might Not Exactly Hit the Met Gala Theme But Who Cares When It Looks This Good?

GQ: The Met Gala’s biggest fit comes in pink.

An invite to the Met Gala comes with great responsibility. There’s a theme to dress for—this year’s theme is “Gilded Glamour”—and attendees must come up with an outfit for that theme that’s great and outrageous…but not so outrageous it gets them roasted online. But sometimes an outfit is so perfect, we can forgive it for missing a theme’s bullseye. That’s where Sebastian Stan landed with his Pepto-Bismol-on-steroids Valentino look. It may not be a perfect fit among the many more literal interpretations of this year’s theme, but who cares? Sebastian Stan looks really good in pink.

The actor arrived at the Met Gala red carpet in a pink coat, pink shirt, pink trousers, pink sunglasses, pink sneakers, and even pink socks. This is monochromatic dressing turned up to 11. (We would have shouted him out for a much mellower shade of pink but there’s nothing quite like going head-to-toe neon.) Does it feel like Gilded Glamour? Not necessarily, but Stan understood at least part of the assignment: wear an outrageously great outfit.

Even at the Met Gala, regularly responsible for a large quotient of the year’s craziest celebrity red-carpet looks, the menswear can sometimes be just a touch dull. At past Met Galas, even the best-dressed guys have tended to take small risks: suits with shorts one year, and maybe a kilt the next when they’re feeling particularly adventurous. This year, many of the men dressed in black tuxedos with tails, which can feel flat compared to the shape-shifting womenswear. Stan, apparently, was tired of the baby steps.

The flamingo shade is the headliner here but don’t let it take away from how great Stan’s outfit fits. A video taken outside the hotel where Stan got ready shows how the coat swings around as he moves and hangs just off his body. It’s perfectly slouchy in the way we like our clothes to fit in 2022. DEADLINE: For Pam & Tommy‘s Lily James and Sebastian Stan, capturing the essences of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, in the public eye and privately, while also re-creating their uber-famous images were the central challenges of the Hulu miniseries. Conversely, Seth Rogen found himself working to dial down the many mannerisms that have made him one of contemporary Hollywood’s most likable stars.

Appearing together during Deadline’s Contenders Television panel, the trio revealed the unique approaches they took to convincingly play two enduring ’90s icons in ways both recognizable and revealing, as well as the figure — largely unknown to the general public — who pushed the celebrity couple’s infamous sex tape into the pop culture stratosphere.

Stan explained that to play Lee, he incessantly consumed video and audio of the Mötley Crüe drummer from the era. “It was like an everyday routine,” he said. “I had compiled a two-hour playlist of every single interview I could find, and I was running and trying to get 20,000 steps a day [with it] just on repeat.”

Stan noted that James employed a similar routine to channel the Baywatch actress, to an even greater extreme.

“Even between shots as they were setting up, [Lily was] listening to her constantly,” he said. “It was just a nonstop thing.”

Externally, they were aided by hair and makeup teams that meticulously transformed the actors’ physiques into uncanny doppelgangers for Anderson and Lee. “All the 3 a.m. wake-ups, because he had all his tattoos and I had prosthetics,” recalled James. “It was a long process every day to sort of make that change into someone else.”

“I think we were both kind of just hanging on by thread, texting each other, going like, ‘On a scale of one to 10, how horrible are you feeling about what we’re about to do?’” admitted Stan, who said the nail-biting continued right until their first camera test in character. “We finally got to put tattoos on, try the clothes, try everything, and then I think we both had that moment where we were like, ‘I think we’re gonna be OK, maybe.’ They both required such a massive transformation, I think, for both of us.”

Outside of the imagery familiar to the public, James explained that executive producer Craig Gillespie, who directed the first three episodes of the miniseries, pointed the actors toward finding an authentic sense of behind-the-scenes intimacy between the couple.

“Right from the word go, he really wanted this [to be] an opportunity to see them behind the camera, not when they’re displayed in an interview and being a sort of ‘on’ version – like, what were they like, intimately, privately together,” James said. “And obviously that took a huge leap of imagination, too. We can’t possibly really know, but we based on what we learned and read and watched that was the sort of where we landed.”

In playing Rand Gautheir, Rogen knew he didn’t have to summon a long-established public figure; instead, he had to downplay his own innate likability.

“I know I’m inherently likable as an actor, and I didn’t want the character to be too likable,” Rogen said. “Something that we actually tried to modulate, was how many of the things that I generally do as a performer that make me likable do I do? I don’t laugh in the movie at all. I don’t smile, really, ever. I don’t do any of the affable behaviors that I think make me someone that people feel like they know and can relate to.

“It is the instinct of a lot of actors, I’ve found, to like make their characters highly redeemable in some way, or they have to like something about the character,” he added. “I’m not that kind of actor – like, I liked nothing about Rand. I found him not a great person, by any means, and I found that he was not someone that I related to in any way.”

And like James and Stan, Rogen never met his onscreen alter ego in real life – as far as he knows. “Rand grows weed in Northern California, so I might have met him organically just through my day-to-day life without knowing it,” he laughed.



VARIETY:The cast and creatives behind “Fresh,” a rom-com-turned-thriller that debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, unpacked the need for horror (and a touch of humor) when tackling today’s realities of dating and the continued commodification of women.

“There’s a lot of tropes in this film that are there for a reason – and hopefully we’re challenging them. We’re twisting them in a different way,” director Mimi Cave told senior entertainment writer Angelique Jackson in Variety’s Virtual Sundance Studio presented by Audible.

“[There’s a] subconscious way women operate in the world that men don’t know about,” added the film’s writer, Lauryn Kahn.

In “Fresh,” a young woman named Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) meets Steve (Sebastian Stan), and the two start seeing each other romantically. However, Noa soon learns that her new partner has some concerning dietary tendencies — diving the film into the literal meaning of “meat market.”

“[‘Fresh’] was very complex and sort of surprising. [It] kind of pulls the rug from underneath your feet,” said Stan. “As actors, it’s a nice challenge.”

“[The film] is sort of exposing this level of fear of threats that we do live with without ever discussing or interrogating,” added Edgar-Jones. “What’s so wonderful is being able to explore that whilst also creating something that is really entertaining. There is a lot of dark humor throughout this script, and I love that.”

Jojo T. Gibbs, who portrays Noa’s best friend in the movie, also noted the importance of seeing platonic relationships in the film’s landscape — as well as the joys of working together as a cast on the project.

“When I did the chemistry read with Daisy, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, she’s amazing.’ We clicked from the jump, and the bond just was very fluid. And I think it spilled over onto the screen very well,” said Gibbs.
